So what does SPF really mean?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and it’s related to the percentage of UVB rays (yes, ONLY UVB) that is blocked from the sun. BUT, it’s not an easily calculated percentage.
☀️ SPF 15 filters out about 93% of UVB
☀️ SPF 30 filters out about 97% of UVB
and here’s where it get’s interesting...
☀️ SPF 50 only filters out about 98% of UVB.
Here’s your takeaway...
☀️Your protection doesn’t double as the SPF doubles. In fact, SPF 30 and 50 aren’t very different from one another.
☀️SPF will still allow UVA (A for aging) rays through, unless it’s broad spectrum (aka Mineral sunscreens)
☀️No amount of SPF value will 100% protect you from sunburn. Put on a hat and t-shirt during peak hours.
☀️SPF has nothing to do with how long you can stay in the sun. Always reapply every 2 hours!
